The University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research...
has been studying adolescent alcohol use since 1975. This began with surveying attitudes and practices of 12th graders and was later expanded to include 8th graders and 10th graders. These findings have been a wake-up call for the prevention field for the need to begin programs before young people entered high school and now new research indicates that the key time to initiate prevention efforts should be in the fifth grade.
